Venezuela’s oil industry showed remarkable resilience in 2024, as reported by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). The country’s crude oil production reached 921,000 barrels per day (bpd) on average, according to direct OPEC sources.

This marked a significant increase from the 783,000 bpd average in 2023. Secondary sources cited in the OPEC report confirmed the upward trend, albeit with slightly lower figures.

The Venezuelan government attributes the industry’s previous decline to U.S. sanctions against state oil company. Despite these challenges, the oil sector demonstrated a strong recovery throughout 2024.

In December, Venezuela pumped an impressive 998,000 bpd of crude, nearly achieving its goal of surpassing 1 million bpd by year-end. This resurgence in oil production brings a glimmer of hope for Venezuela’s struggling economy.

The country has long relied on its vast oil reserves as its primary source of foreign currency. The recent uptick in production suggests a potential turnaround for the nation’s financial outlook.

However, Venezuela’s oil industry still faces significant hurdles. Years of underinvestment and mismanagement have left much of the country’s oil infrastructure in disrepair. Skilled labor shortages and ongoing political tensions further complicate the sector’s recovery efforts.

The price of Venezuela’s flagship crude oil blend, Merey, also saw positive movement in 2024. OPEC reported that Merey’s average price in December reached $61.13 per barrel, up from $59.58 in November. This price stability provides some economic relief for the oil-dependent nation.

Venezuela’s oil exports also experienced growth in 2024, rising by 10.5% compared to the previous year. The country shipped an average of 772,000 bpd, the highest level since 2019 when energy sanctions were first imposed.

China remained the top destination for Venezuelan crude, followed by the United States. The U.S. temporarily eased some sanctions in late 2023, allowing companies like Chevron to resume operations in Venezuela.

This policy shift contributed to the increased production and exports. However, the future of these arrangements remains uncertain, particularly with potential changes in U.S. leadership on the horizon.
