Veteran HSBC banker Peter Wong Tung-shun will succeed barrister Priscilla Wong Pui-sze as chairman of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) governing council after her term ends next month, authorities have announced following months of tensions besetting the top management of the institution.
The government on Wednesday announced the appointment of Peter Wong, 72, the non-executive Asia-Pacific chairman of Hong Kong’s largest bank HSBC, as HKU council chairman for a term of three years with effect from January 1 next year.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu, in his capacity as the university chancellor, also appointed five new members to the council: Simon Li Tin-chui, Irons Sze, Rock Chen Chung-nin, Wilfred Wong Kam-pui and Dr Samuel Yung Wing-ki.
Wong was caught up in the criticism over university president Xiang Zhang, who was thrust into the spotlight when the 25 members of the governing council received multiple emails, accusing him of misconduct over a range of issues, including his handling of donations.
While Zhang was later cleared of the allegations, the conflict persisted with both sides issuing open letters criticising matters including the reshuffling of senior management at the university.
