Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) and Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.) will meet Tuesday for potentially the last major scheduled event of a chaotic, coin-toss election.

Why it matters: VP debates rarely change a race's trajectory, but either running mate making a gaffe or misstep could have an outsized impact.

State of play: Vance, 40, is likely to try to cast Walz as too liberal for a broad swath of the electorate, while criticizing aspects of his tenure as governor, Axios' Sophia Cai and Torey Van Oot report.

  • Walz, 60, was selected as Harris' VP pick in part because of his affable, relatable appeal. The campaign has kept his debate plans tight-lipped, but he'll likely try lean into that aspect of his personality to try to appeal to undecided voters.

Zoom out: Vice President Harris has called for another debate against former President Trump after he repeatedly missed opportunities to attack her in their face-off last month. He's so far declined.

How to watch: The 90-minute vice presidential debate, which is being hosted by CBS News, kicks off at 9pm ET.

  • Axios reporters will be providing real-time analysis and coverage of the debate, with Alex Thompson and Sophia Cai on site in New York City.
