A 7.7 magnitude earthquake shook Myanmar and Thailand on Friday, leaving people dead and buildings devastated in its wake.
Officials said at least 144 were confirmed dead and at least 732 injured in Myanmar, the New York Post reported. The epicenter of the quake was determined to be near Mandalay, a city in Myanmar.
Thailand Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said three people died at a high-rise construction site in Bangkok and 90 were unaccounted for, The Associated Press reported. (RELATED: ‘The Worst I’ve Ever Seen’: Dozens Dead Across Six States After Tornadoes, Wildfires, Dust Storms)
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimated that the number of dead could be well into the thousands, though the precise number remains unclear. “High casualties and extensive damage are probable and the disaster is likely widespread. Past red alerts have required a national or international response,” USGS wrote after issuing their red alert.
Video emerged of a high-rise collapsing to the ground, sending scores of construction workers fleeing the chaotic scene. The footage was from Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, TMZ reported. Bangkok is several hundred miles from the deadly earthquake’s reported epicenter.
The Thailand National Institute for Emergency Medicine claimed that 320 workers were at the scene when the tower collapsed.
