A 65-year-old man was shot in the head after he confronted two men who ran over his cat in their car, police say.
The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was shot on Sunday evening in Kansas City, Missouri, the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office said.
The shooting unfolded outside Atchinson Hospital and the man miraculously survived his injuries.
He told deputies at the hospital that he witnessed two black men in a car run over his cat, leading to a violent altercation.
He said the two men exited their car before one pulled out a gun and shot him in the head before beating him with a bicycle frame, per Fox4.
The victim was then transported by air to KU Medical Center for treatment as authorities launched an urgent manhunt for the two men.
The suspects have not been apprehended, however the sheriff's office said it has issued several search warrants.

It comes amid a crimewave in Kansas City that has seen it become one of the most dangerous cities in America.

According to crime statistics site Neighborhood Scout, Kansas City ranks among the most dangerous cities in the nation, with a violent crime rate of 15.35 incidents per 1,000 residents.
The city's murder rate is over five times the national average and its assault rate stands at over four times the national average.
In recent months, residents say a spate of criminals riding on ATVs and dirt bikes have taken over parts of the city and sparked chaos on the streets.
Locals say the scenes have left them terrified to go out at night, as the ATV gangs ride down streets and tear up sidewalks in scenes resembling the Mad Max movies.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas has come under fire for the wave of street-racing gangs running riot in his city, but he told the Daily Mail in May that he rejects claims that he's personally responsible for the collapse of law and order in his city.
Lucas slammed the 'reckless and foolish' street-racing gangs that terrify locals, but said he believed it was up to the police to solve the issue.
'We need to make sure that we have enough officers,' Lucas said.
'More than anything, we need to make sure that there are real consequences for those who are engaging in reckless and foolish behavior in downtown Kansas City and all around our community.'

Residents and business owners accuse Lucas of soft-on-crime policies and failing to prosecute lawbreakers since the George Floyd race riots of 2020, and of ignoring their repeated pleas for public safety.
Despite these widespread concerns, Lucas said the problem was under control, that Kansas City could 'handle this moment' and that a police recruitment drive would get more officers on the streets in the coming months.
Locals say they fear to walk downtown at night, and owners of bars and restaurants there say they can understand why, while also complaining that they're on the brink of going bust.
