Three Mexican cities popular with US retirees and families get nonstop links to four US airports in early December.

Mexican low-cost airline Volaris will open four new nonstop routes to the United States between Tuesday, 1 December, and Friday, 4 December. The flights connect Guadalajara, Puebla and Querétaro with Washington Dulles, Atlanta, Chicago O’Hare and Las Vegas.

For US travellers, the new routes remove a connection on trips to three of central Mexico’s best-known cities. For Mexican families in the United States, they arrive just in time for the December holidays.

What the New Routes Are

Volaris announced eight new routes on 7 August, four of them to the United States. The others link Guadalajara with Guatemala City and Medellín, and Puebla with Acapulco and Puerto Escondido.

Guadalajara to Washington Dulles opens first, on Tuesday, 1 December. Flights leave Guadalajara on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and return from Dulles on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Guadalajara to Atlanta starts on Wednesday, 2 December, with four flights a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Volaris says Atlanta is a new destination for the airline.

Puebla to Chicago O’Hare also starts on Wednesday, 2 December. Flights leave Puebla on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and return from Chicago on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Querétaro to Las Vegas is the last to open, on Friday, 4 December. It runs twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays, according to the airline’s route schedule.

Holger Blankenstein, a Volaris executive vice president, said the airline remains committed to expanding links across the Americas. Tickets are sold on volaris.com and in the official Volaris app.

Why These Three Cities Matter

Guadalajara is one of Mexico’s largest metropolitan areas and the capital of Jalisco state. Nearby Lake Chapala and Ajijic are home to one of the largest communities of US and Canadian retirees in Mexico.

Puebla, about two hours by road east of Mexico City, is known for its colonial centre, its tiled churches and its food. Volaris already flies from Puebla to Newark, Houston and Los Angeles.

Querétaro has grown fast as an industrial and aerospace hub, drawing US companies and foreign engineers. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a popular weekend trip from Mexico City.

For remote workers and retirees, all three cities become easier to reach from the East Coast, the South and the Midwest. Las Vegas gains a direct link to Querétaro for the first time with Volaris.

Entry Rules for US Citizens

US citizens flying to Mexico need a valid passport book, because the passport card is not accepted for international air travel. Tourists from the United States do not need a Mexican visa, and the immigration officer sets the length of stay on arrival.

Keep any entry document or stamp you receive at the airport, as you may need it when you leave. Anyone planning to work or live in Mexico needs the correct residency visa from a Mexican consulate before travelling.

Safety Levels by State

The US State Department rates Mexico overall at Level 2, “Exercise increased caution,” in an advisory issued on 29 May 2026. Puebla and Querétaro states are also at Level 2, with no specific restrictions for US government employees.

Jalisco, which includes Guadalajara, is at Level 3, “Reconsider travel,” due to terrorism, crime and kidnapping. The advisory places no restrictions on US government employees in the Guadalajara metropolitan area, Chapala or Ajijic.

The restrictions in Jalisco cover parts of the south of the state near Michoacán, including stretches of federal highways 110 and 80. Visitors who stay in and around Guadalajara should still avoid driving on rural roads after dark.

Costs and Practical Tips

Volaris is a low-cost carrier, so the base fare usually covers only a personal item. Checked bags, larger cabin bags and seat choice cost extra, so compare the full price before booking.

December is a peak month on routes between Mexico and the United States, especially in the weeks around Christmas. Booking early usually matters more than usual on routes with only two to four flights a week.

Carry some Mexican pesos for taxis, markets and small shops, even though cards are widely accepted in the three cities. A MXN 500 note is worth about US$27, and MXN 1,000 is about US$55.

Conversions use the open.er-api.com rate of MXN 18.30 per US dollar on 11 October 2026. Use official airport taxis or ride-hailing apps rather than unmarked cars when you land.

What It Means for You

From Washington, Atlanta, Chicago or Las Vegas, these trips no longer need a stop in Mexico City or a US hub. That can save several hours each way, especially in the busy holiday season.

If you already live in one of the three cities, the routes add options for family visits and trips home. With only a few flights a week on each route, plan a backup in case a flight is cancelled.

What Is Not Known

The August announcement listed flight times but not fares. Check the current schedule on volaris.com before booking hotels, transfers or onward flights.

Volaris has not said publicly how it will adjust the routes after the winter peak. It is also not known whether the airline will add more frequencies if demand is strong.

What Comes Next

The first US flight, from Guadalajara to Washington Dulles, leaves at 23:47 on Tuesday, 1 December. The Atlanta and Chicago routes follow on Wednesday, 2 December, and Las Vegas on Friday, 4 December.
