Walmart is expanding its drone delivery service to seven cities in its effort to reach more than 40 million U.S. customers by 2027, news outlets report.

The retail giant and its drone partner Wing plan to operate delivery drones in Memphis, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, the San Francisco Bay Area and Salt Lake City.

The service is already offered in Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, and Charlotte, North Carolina.

Wing’s drone capabilities have increased, thanks to the Federal Aviation Administration approving drone flights after sunset, enabling delivery of packages weighing up to 5 pounds.

Walmart and Wing claim the nation’s largest residential drone delivery network, with thousands of items eligible for delivery, including groceries and electronics, within 6 to 10 miles of a participating store.

Customers can access the service through the Walmart app or Wing’s app. If a customer’s address qualifies, the drone delivery option will appear automatically at checkout.

Walmart+ members can use the service for free for a limited time, while non-members will pay $20 per order.

Wing launched its first service in conjunction with Walmart in Frisco, Texas, in September 2023.

Competitors in the drone delivery space include Flytrex, DroneUp, Amazon Prime Air and Zipline.
