Jac Schaeffer is developing a new “Stargate” TV series for Amazon MGM Studios, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.
The project falls under Schaeffer’s overall deal with Amazon MGM, which was announced earlier this year. According to sources, a writers’ room is expected to open in the near future. Along with Schaeffer, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures will executive produce the project.
Reps for Amazon and Schaeffer declined to comment.
This will be Amazon’s second attempt at a new “Stargate” series. It was previously reported that Martin Gero was working on a new TV entry in the sci-fi franchise, but that project ultimately did not move forward.
Schaeffer is no stranger to the genre world, given her previous success with the smash hit series “WandaVision” for Marvel Studios and Disney+. The show was the first Marvel Cinematic Universe series to premiere on Disney+, with Marvel stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprising their roles as Wanda and Vision from the Marvel films. It went on to earn 23 Primetime Emmy Awards nominations as well as numerous other accolades. It was one of the most well-reviewed and highly-praised TV shows of 2021.
Schaeffer then went on to create the “WandaVision” spinoff “Agatha All Along” starring Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, reprising her role from “WandaVision.” Schaeffer was the showrunner, writer, and executive producer on that show in addition to directing. Prior to her time with Marvel, she wrote the screenplay for the Disney animated featurette “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure” as well as the 2019 Anne Hathaway-Rebel Wilson comedy “The Hustle,” which was a remake of the 1980s comedy feature “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.”
She is repped by Curate, CAA, and attorney Erik Hyman.
“Stargate” originally launched as a 1994 movie starring James Spader and Kurt Russell. The film was followed by the hit series “Stargate SG-1,” which aired for 10 seasons and starred Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge among others. The spinoff “Stargate Atlantis” then aired for five more seasons between 2004 and 2008.
