New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s recent State of the State Speech featured an unusual number, atypical of a serious address to one’s constituents.  Footage from the event shows numerous dancers in black suits performing a skit to several different contemporary hip-hop tunes.  However, many on social media criticized the move, claiming the mood should be more serious given the state of affairs in New York.

Reacting to the jovial dance, many felt as if Hochul was not taking numerous issues plaguing her residents seriously.  Over the past several years, New York, and specifically the Big Apple, have been faced with a crippling migrant crisis, a cost of living crisis, unprecedented crime, and more.  Therefore, many felt that it was inappropriate to be skipping across the stage while such issues loom.

Demonstrating this sentiment, one user on social media wrote, “Under @GovKathyHochul’s leadership, the great State of New York leads the the nation in several categories: *Population loss*Income loss*Migrant spending *Healthcare spending per capita *Public welfare per capita *National guard members in public transit per capita *Education spending per capita *State-Local Tax Burden per Capita *Taxes Paid to Own State per Capita *Debt per Capita *Public transit fare evasion per capita *Congestion taxes and subsequent increases in cost of living per capita On top of this, violent crime in New York City is approaching 25-year highs.”

“I don’t know how I missed this one. This was a part of NY Gov. Kathy Hochul’s 2025 State of the State Address. My state is not run by serious people,” the popular conservative account I Meme Therefore I Am said, claiming the display was not reflective of competent leadership. “After all that has occurred in the past couple months, this is way too happy. Just a couple weeks ago a woman was burned alive in the subway. Read the room, Kathy,” another person wrote.

One person joked that they felt the clip was a scene out of “The Twilight Zone.”  They wrote, “Why do I expect Rod Serling to walk in about now puffing on a cigarette… Imagine, if you will, a scene not unlike the grand ballrooms of yesteryear, yet this is no ordinary gathering. Here, in the velvet-draped halls of power, known to us as The Twilight Zone, the nation’s leaders assemble not for the dance of diplomacy or the waltz of wisdom, but for something far more sinister.”

Another person wrote, “New York can do so much better, I thought this was an SNL skit….I look forward to seeing what snl does with this, they’ve had a deep well to pull from the last few years.”  Echoing similar sentiment, another person said, “Hey @nypost @NYDailyNews is taxpayer money being used for this crap? NYC has people being set on fire and gunned down in the street but everyone’s happy and dancing? Nero fiddled while Rome burned, @GovKathyHochul hired some dancers for a state of the union.”

Yet another comment calling the horrific state of the New York City subway said, “So, NY, you paid for those outfits, the choreography and the rehearsal time. And the performance. Your subways are a third world nightmare, but look how cute they are!”
