Business legend Kevin O’Leary recently doubled down on his calls for California’s leadership to be held accountable for the devastating wildfires in Southern California, which are shaping up to be one of the costliest natural disasters in human history.  The “Shark Tank” star maintained that Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass should resign from office over the disaster.

O’Leary’s bold comments come as House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed ongoing “discussions” about including wildfire into the debt limit.  “I think every taxpayer in America, including those in California, would like to tie this aid to removing Newsom and Bass. Now. Gone,” O’Leary said during an appearance on “Varney & Co.” earlier this week.

Explaining his stance toward California’s “incompetent” leadership, O’Leary asserted that no taxpayer-funded aid should be extended until they are removed from office. “Part of the deal would be, and I know Trump likes new ideas, here’s one: not a dime until those two are whacked from their jobs immediately,” he said. “They are so incompetent, and all of the decisions they’ve made led to this, and they’re still making mistakes. They’re horrific managers. Whack them.”

The American Tribune reported on other news about the fires in which Vice President-elect JD Vance set the record straight, denying accusations that President-elect Donald Trump would withhold wildfire aid. Vance maintained, “I know the president would love to visit California,” adding that “our hearts go out” to those whose who have been victimized by the fires

He continued, “Whatever your political affiliation, it’s hard not to see those images and just be heartbroken for our fellow Americans who are going through a very tough time.”  Affirming Trump’s commitment to disaster relief, Vance added, “And I do think, frankly, the federal government has to do a better job. President Trump is committed to doing a better job when it comes to disaster relief. That’s true for the hurricane victims and flood victims in North Carolina. It’s true for the fire victims in California. We just — we have to do a better job. We need competent, good governance.”

Echoing the sentiment shared by O’Leary about the apparent lack of competence in California, Vance maintained that something has to change. “There is a serious lack of competent governance in California, and I think it’s part of the reason why these fires have gotten so bad. We need to do a better job at both the state and federal level,” he said.

Vance called out the insufficient infrastructure in California, which the government has been unable to maintain. “Some of these reservoirs have been dry for 15, 20 years. The fire hydrants are being reported as going dry while the firefighters are trying to put out the fires. There was a serious lack of competent governance in California,” he said.
