Two mechanics have revealed the popular car brands that they believe you should never buy.

Sherwood Cooke Jr. and his son, Sherwood Cooke III, who both work at Georgia-based car repair shop Royalty Auto Service, recently went viral after they shared the vehicles that they'd never recommend to their customers.

The father-son duo explained in a recent TikTok video that cars made by the companies Hyundai and Kia often had problems, so they advise against purchasing any of their models.

In the video, Sherwood III told his dad that he had a Hyundai for him to 'check out,' and explained that it was from 2020 and had roughly 154,000 miles on it.

'It's had pretty regular services done to it. Take a listen to it. Start it up,' he told his dad.

Sherwood Jr. then got into the black car and turned the car on, and immediately a loud, unsettling noise started blaring from the engine.

'It's over. That's bad,' a shocked Sherwood Jr. said, before asking his son, 'This has had regular service on it?'

'Based off of the Carfax, pretty regularly,' replied his son. 'I think it was about a 7,500 to 8,000-mile average.'

He also explained that the car was not due for an oil service.

'150,000 miles is not that many miles,' Sherwood III pointed out.

'I will tell you now, you don’t see too many Toyotas or Hondas with 150,000 miles on them with bad engines,' his dad added.

'We don't want to hurt [anyone's] feelings, we're just sharing our honest experience and opinion.'

'People always wonder why we don't ever recommend Hyundai/Kia,' they wrote in a text overlay.

They added in the caption, 'It's a pretty normal occurrence.'

Hyundai owns about 33 per cent of Kia Corporation, and together, the two companies make up South Korea's top two automobile manufacturers.

The TikTok, which was viewed more than one million times, sparked a fierce debate between viewers.

Many people who own Hyundai or Kia cars were quick to defend the brands - while others shared their horror stories.

'Always had Kia. Zero issues. Zero,' one defender wrote. Another added, 'On my third Hyundai and loving it.'

'2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL - 141,000 [miles]… regular service per schedule. Catastrophic engine failure needed new motor. Never again,' someone else revealed.

'150,000 and [needing a] new engine is inexcusable,' a fourth comment read.

'Hyundai and Kia in Greece never dies. They are one of the most reliable vehicles under Honda and Toyota of course,' a fifth said.

'I have a 2018 with 100,000 and just had to have the engine replaced. But was under warranty cause I bought it the week before,' a different user shared.

The TikTok, which was viewed more than one million times, sparked a fierce debate between viewers

'Hyundai basically ruined my life when the engine failed and my extended warranty that I paid for would have covered it but Hyundai’s "lawsuit/extended warranty" ruined that,' someone else wrote.

'Hyundai wouldn’t cover it because it "didn’t blow exactly the way that the extended warranty lawsuit covered."

'My extended warranty would still pay if Hyundai would write a letter stating that they wouldn’t fix it.

'Hyundai refused because they might fix my dead engine in the future if it blew up in exactly the right way.

'Found out that even if I could have gotten approved it’s a two year engine waitlist.'
