Jarrod Bowen’s Controversial Late Penalty Separates Sides

A highly contentious VAR call late on gave West Ham a penalty that earned them a big win. Check out the best facts and Opta data from the game our West Ham vs Man Utd stats page.

Jarrod Bowen won this match with the fifth stoppage-time goal of the weekend in the Premier League, but his was the most controversial of the lot.

The game was still goalless with only 20 minutes remaining – thanks in large part to Manchester United full-back Diogo Dalot missing a near-open goal in the first half – but a flurry of late goals led to a dramatic conclusion.

Crysensio Summerville had put West Ham ahead with the hosts’ first shot on target of the match, but Manchester United struck back as Casemiro scored his first league goal since August 2023.

It appeared as though the spoils would be shared only for the VAR to intervene late on. Matthijs de Ligt was adjudged to have fouled Danny Ings – although only after a lengthy stoppage – and West Ham were awarded a penalty. Bowen smashed it home to earn West Ham a win that sees them move above United in the table.
