We look ahead to Sunday’s Premier League game at the London Stadium with our West Ham vs Liverpool prediction and preview. Arne Slot’s men are looking to take their strong lead into the new year.
West Ham vs Liverpool: The Key Insights
- Liverpool backed to continue their winning run, triumphing in 64.5% of the Opta supercomputer’s pre-match simulations.
- The Reds are unbeaten in their last 10 Premier League away games (W6 D4).
- West Ham have won just one of their last 16 Premier League games against Liverpool (D3 L12).
Liverpool fans couldn’t have hoped for more this Christmas after moving seven points clear at the top of the Premier League, but they’ll now be looking to end 2024 on a high against West Ham.
The Reds benefitted from Chelsea’s late defeat to Fulham on Boxing Day before they had even kicked a ball. They they beat Leicester City 3-1, albeit doing it the hard way as they came from behind.
They have now come from behind to earn 12 points this season, with only struggling Manchester City (14) winning more points via that method, as they extended their unbeaten streak to 13 games in the Premier League.
And it would be a surprise if they did not continue that recent run, especially given they’ve lost their final league game of a calendar year just once in the last 10 years (W8 D1).
Liverpool have served up some crackers on the road in recent weeks – running riot in a 6-3 victory against Tottenham in their last such match – though Arne Slot will perhaps be targeting a more routine victory if he can get it.
They are unbeaten in their last 10 Premier League away games (W6 D4), showing particular style this season by winning six of their eight such outings.
However, West Ham may feel they have a reasonable chance, as Slot’s side have conceded 10 goals in their last four Premier League away matches, shipping at least two each time.
The Hammers do look a lot steadier heading into the second half of the season after a run of tumultuous results at the start of Julen Lopetegui’s reign. They are now unbeaten in four top-flight matches, while they are looking to win consecutive league games for the first time since March.
On a broader level, West Ham have won their final league game in two of the last three calendar years (L1), beating Arsenal 2-0 in 2023, though not since 2007 and 2008 have they won in consecutive years.
In order to change that though, they will have to stop Mohamed Salah, a feat many teams have failed to do throughout the season.
The Egyptian, who scored on his 250th Premier League start for Liverpool against Leicester, registered his 250th goal involvement for the Reds in that game and is leading the Golden Boot race this season after Erling Haaland’s recent drought.
Salah is in red-hot form and has been involved in 27 goals in 17 games in the competition this season (16 goals, 11 assists), just one fewer than he had in 32 appearances last term.
For the home side, it’s unlikely Lukasz Fabianski will feature after he was taken off with a nasty head injury in West Ham’s win at Southampton.
Arne Slot is expected to have an almost fully fit squad to choose from, with Conor Bradley and Ibrahima Konate the only absentees through injury. Dominik Szoboszlai will serve a one-match ban after picking up a yellow card against Leicester.
West Ham vs Liverpool Head-to-Head
West Ham have won just one of their last 16 Premier League games against Liverpool (D3 L12), beating them 3-2 at the London Stadium in November 2021.
Liverpool have scored at least twice in seven of their last eight Premier League away games against West Ham, including in each of the last five in a row.
West Ham vs Liverpool Prediction
Liverpool are, perhaps unsurprisingly, the favourites to win this one as they won 64.5% of the Opta supercomputer’s 10,000 simulations.
West Ham, meanwhile, come out on top in 16.1% of those, with a further 19.4% chance of holding onto a point against the Premier League leaders.
