The PlayStation 6 was at one point rumored to be circling a holiday 2027 launch window. Some believe it’s now moved into 2028, the year Sony is ending disc support for new PlayStation games. According to CEO Hiroki Totoki, even Sony doesn’t know the answer yet.

In a new profile by The Wall Street Journal, the executive who briefly ran PlayStation after Jim Ryan’s retirement in 2024 confirmed that no date has been locked in for the PS6 launch yet, even internally. Confirmation of the fluid situation comes as RAMageddon continues to cause havoc in gaming and the rest of the tech market.

Shortages have caused unprecedented price hikes to the PS5 over five years into this console generation, and many are expecting the trend to continue through at least 2027 and potentially 2028 as well. Even if the AI-fueled frenzy driving the shortages subsides, it’s unclear whether prices will come back down or just not get any worse.

In its latest earnings call with investors, Sony confirmed it had all of the RAM it needs to meet its forecasted sales of current PS5s through March 2027. But with reports that all of next year’s RAM production has already sold out, who knows what will happen heading into the launch lead-up for the PS6?

The company previously told shareholders it wasn’t planning to sell new hardware at a big loss, suggesting the PS6 will have to cost substantially more than the $500 PS5 that arrived in the middle of the pandemic. That’s left many fearing that what might have been Sony’s pitch for a more affordable hardware generation is about to become its most expensive and debut at $1,000 or more.
