Soon after, Today viewers erupted into a heated debate on social media over which star should replace Hoda when she officially departs in early 2025.

'I will miss you all desperately, but I’m ready and excited.'

Hoda - who has been a part of NBC for 26 years and reportedly earns about $8 million a year - not only serves as one of the main anchors on Today, alongside Savannah Guthrie, but she also cohosts her own segment with Jenna Bush Hager, called Today with Hoda and Jenna.

So who is going to take her spot? Here are all the candidates for the role - and the one star who fans want most.

Craig Melvin

The top pick amongst fans seemed to be Craig Melvin, who became a news anchor for Today back in 2018.

Craig, 45, had a knack for journalism from a young age, and landed his first job as a reporter at NBC affiliate WIS-TV when he was in high school.

After graduating from Wofford College in South Carolina, he officially joined the network's morning news team, and for years, he slowly worked his way up before eventually switching to Washington, D.C.-based network WRC-TV.

In 2011, he joined MSNBC as a daytime anchor, and within his first year there, he covered a slew of massive events including the Republican and Democratic national conventions and election night.
