“The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg indicated that she believed a bakery may have refused to make a treat for her birthday due to differing political opinions.

The 69-year-old comedian shared her thoughts during Wednesday’s episode of the daytime talk show. When Goldberg presented the other panelists with one of her favorite desserts, Charlotte Russe, she mentioned having a hard time getting the creamy sponge cake dessert from a Staten Island bakery, also explaining that she had asked for this dessert because it was one of her mother’s favorites.

“Now, I should tell you, Charlotte Russe has no political leanings, and the place that made these refused to make them for me,” Goldberg said, eliciting a gasp from the audience.

Fellow panelist Sunny Hostin replied, “Oh, really?” while Sara Haines spit out the piece she had been eating.

“They said that their ovens had gone down, all kinds of stuff, but folks went and got them anyway,” Goldberg continued, “which is why I’m not telling you who made them.”

She added that the reason for refusing service “can’t be because I’m a woman” and then speculated that “perhaps they did not like my politics.”

“But that’s okay,” Goldberg went on, “because you know what? Listen, this is my mother’s celebration. Pick these up and celebrate with me and my mom. Thank you everyone for celebrating my birthday today.”

The actress refused to name the bakery, but Entertainment Weekly reported the desserts came from Holtermann’s Baker on Staten Island. The owner, Jill Holtermann, told the outlet that her refusing the order had nothing to do with “political affiliations.” She said the bakery was “having trouble with [the] boilers.”

Holtermann said Goldberg had initially asked for the baked treats for a November 6 talk show appearance and her birthday broadcast on Wednesday. The owner said she turned down the orders because she “didn’t want to make a commitment that I can’t carry through.”

“I said to Whoopi, ‘I can’t do it right now,'” she told the outlet. “We have so many things going on with my boiler,’ because the building is from 1930, so, when she called me, I had no idea [if we could] be baking everything.”

The owner confirmed that a woman came into the bakery on the morning of November 13 and picked up 50 Charlotte Russe desserts, which she had been able to make despite the issues the bakery was experiencing.
