Experts say the presidential election may overwhelm Americans with emotions — from optimism to disappointment, frustration, and fear. One woman in Sauk City, WI is seeing more people stop by her business to smash their rage away.
Disorderly Conduct Rage Rooms has seen an uptick in bookings this week, according to owner Amanda Chestnut.
“They're feeling the anger of maybe their nominee didn't get elected,” Chestnut said. “The election being sort of a key point in time where people are focused more on things maybe outside of their control, so they're feeling a little out of control and they want to come in and release some of that energy definitely.”
It’s easy to feel in control with a sledgehammer or bat in your hand.
Smashing a dish or computer monitor takes less than two seconds, but according to Chestnut, “it takes 90 seconds for an emotion to fully process its cycle.”
But suppressing emotions in your body can cause physical health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes that last much longer, so venting is important for your mind and your body.
“You're not carrying that around, you don't have to worry about the big eruption coming out later on." "You can just kind of process it and move on with your life,” she said.
Chestnut found she didn't have a safe place to release those emotions when she really needed it.
“I started Disorderly Conduct after my dad passed away,” she said. “I was going through the stages of grief and I hit that anger stage and I hit it really hard as an independent mom. I didn't have that ability to kind of like, lose it at home.”
So the former deputy sheriff opened the rage rooms last year. “America, where the highest incarceration rate per capita so I'm not being allowed to be angry in public and getting arrested because you're throwing bottles around in your own garage didn't sit well with me.”
Now she says she's seeing a lot more people needing to deal with their own life-altering event.
After booking a session online and signing a waiver, you’re led to the gear room. A helmet with safety goggles or face shield is required; gloves and coveralls are optional.
Then you choose your dishes, glassware, or electronics you’d like to smash (paying by the basket) and your weapon of choice.
“My favorite is probably either the sledgehammer or the baseball bat because they just swing really easy,” Chestnut said. “Croquet mallets is typical Wisconsin fashion.” She’s even seen people “take the trophies and smash the heads off of the trophies. Frying pans are probably one of the most laughed-at weapons.”
Each person gets a private room with a Bluetooth speaker and their emotions. “I encourage screaming,” Chestnut said.
She feels satisfied hearing the people feel relieved after choosing to take a bat to something, not someone.
“They tell me they feel lighter. They feel like a weight has been lifted off of their shoulders,” Chestnut said. “If I hear screaming, I know I'm doing my job because I'm providing that safe place for people that are able to do that.”

The name’s Amanda. Amanda Chestnut.
*snickers*
Moving on: You know, having a little place where people can be violent and it doesn’t hurt anybody and they can get that rage out of their system, and you can make a profit off it SOUNDS LIKE THE AMERICAN WAY to me!!!! *salutes* *”Star Spangled Banner” plays softly in the background*

Given the infantile behavior...
Perhaps the company would be better named, “Padded Wombs.”
