Xavier Becerra caught in lazy act that proves he thinks he’s won governor race

California gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra hasn’t even bothered to update his own campaign website since he became the lone Democrat to advance out of the June primary — apparently believing he’s coasting to an easy victory in the deep-blue state.

Parts of Becerra’s website seem to be stuck in June, with outdated references to his main primary opponent Tom Steyer and confusing sign-up forms links to the election more than two months ago, when the former Health and Human Services secretary was still locked in an intense battle against other Democrats.

Now, his only opponent left is Republican Steve Hilton, and Becerra is the overwhelming favorite to win — enough so that an outdated website may not matter.

Parts of the website seem to have been updated since the San Francisco Standard reported the outdated sections Friday.

The Becerra website originally still had up a page titled “Voters need to know” that outlined the differences between Becerra and billionaire Tom Steyer, who was the only other Democrat that had the best chance to advance out of the primary.

That page has been removed.

But other links are still not updated. Clicking on the section “Help Xavier Win” under the “Take Action” heading still leads to a contact-information-gathering form from the primary.

“We need to make sure that every voter across California knows that there is a critical primary election on June 2 and that Xavier Becerra is the best choice to serve as our next governor,” the form reads.

The site also hasn’t had any news updates from after the primary. The latest news the campaign has posted on the site was from May 21 as “Becerra barnstorms the state in the final days of the primary.”

On social media, though, the Becerra campaign has been more active in the general election battle, posting clips of his recent appearances and some attacks on Hilton, who isn’t mentioned at all on the website.

Becerra told the Standard that intense spending in the last few weeks of the primary may have left the website to dry, and his spokesperson later added the website is undergoing a “full-scale” refresh.

“We were out of money [by the June primary],” said the candidate.

The online gaffe comes as Hilton criticizes Becerra for his instance of dodging reporters last week and is repeatedly asking him to do a one-on-one debate.

It’s “outrageous” and “insulting to the voters,” Hilton has said.

The Post reached out to Hilton for comment on the website.

Becerra did agree to at least one debate with Hilton, though no details have been laid out. The Democrat also has since held at least one gaggle with reporters after an event on Tuesday.
