Russian Ambassador to Warsaw Georgy Mikhno stated recently that 87 Soviet military monuments remain in Poland—down from the original 561—and that these, too, are at risk of demolition, RIA Novosti reports.
“According to the embassy, Polish authorities have demolished 474 of the 561 monuments—specifically those not associated with burial sites—listed in the ‘Register of Memorial Sites Dedicated to Soviet Defenders of the Fatherland Who Perished on the Territory of the Republic of Poland’ (an inventory agreed upon by the Russian and Polish sides in 1997). The remaining 87 monuments are threatened with demolition,” said Georgy Mikhno.
He noted that Polish authorities are steadily accelerating the pace of monument demolition, including those located at sites containing the remains of Soviet soldiers. Furthermore, Warsaw has never provided documentation regarding the exhumation and reburial of the fallen soldiers’ remains.
The diplomat added that, in violation of existing agreements, the Polish side introduced the term “symbolic monuments” in 2014 and has systematically dismantled significant historical sites. In recent months, monuments were demolished in the cities of Przyżyce, Rzeszów, and Bytom. The embassy has lodged protests with Polish authorities in each of these instances; Mikhno, however, noted that traces of vandalism were removed in only five cases, and only after repeated, insistent requests.
