It's no secret that ever since its inception, The Legend of Zelda franchise has been Christ-coded, with its Christian hero Link going forth to save the realm of Hyrule with a giant cross emblazoned upon his 8-bit shield.
With Nintendo's announcement that the series' best game, The Ocarina of Time, was getting a remake on Switch 2, it's time to reveal all the subtle ways that The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time points us to the Lord Jesus Christ.
When you boot up the game, you find child Link asleep on a bed of straw: At least we think that's a bed of straw. The graphics resolution on the Nintendo 64 was a little subpar by today's standards. Who else entered the world as a child at just the right time to save the world and slept on a bed of straw? That's right.
You can spend all day catching fish at Lake Hylia: Much like how Christ catches us and then makes us fishers of men. We're both the fish and the fishermen and, like Lake Hylia, that's deep.
Navi the fairy is always shouting at Link, "Hey! Listen!": This clearly reminds us of how the Holy Spirit is always speaking to us and wanting us to heed His voice.
The Water Temple reminds us that the Lord Jesus doesn't promise us a life of ease, but one full of painful trials: We all know that the Lord loves his children and therefore treats them as sons, allowing them to go through painful trials, including video game levels.
Link has to search high and low for each lost cuckoo to bring them back into the pen in Kakariko Village: The Ocarina of Time points us directly to the Good Shepherd, who lays down His life for His sheep and is willing to leave the 99 behind to go find the one lost sheep. The sheep are cuckoos in this analogy.
If you jump off the chain holding up the drawbridge, you'll find secret rupees: This doesn't tie into Christianity in any way, but it's a helpful tip.
The Ocarina of Time expands quite a bit on the lore for Hyrule, with cinematic sequences that include the Three Goddesses who created everything: We think this might have been a poor English translation, since it was originally written in Japanese first, and that it was actually explicitly teaching that everything was created ex nihilo 6,000 years ago by a Triforce — a Trinity, if you will.
The Great Deku Tree has an evil corruption rotting it from the inside out, just like how we are all spiritually dead in our sins and by nature totally corrupted: That's when Link (a clear stand-in for Jesus) enters into the heart of the Deku Tree to remove the deadness inside. What a clear picture of spiritual regeneration that directly points us to that conversation Jesus had with Nicodemus on the need to be born again. If you think the Deku Tree died, just remember that he got better!
Spoiler Alert — One of the characters transitions from female to male, but then later detransitions back into a female the way God made her: What a picture of how Jesus can redeem any one of us no matter how far they stray from who they were created to be.
