As the holiday travel season approaches, new data is shedding light on which airlines have the worst history when it comes to leaving passengers high and dry.
Data sourced from the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics showed one airline stuck out from the rest regarding the percentage of canceled flights.
QR Code Generator analyzed airlines' scheduled and canceled flights from August 2023 to July 2024 to come up with a list of the worst offenders.
Frontier Airlines, which was also named one of America's worst airlines earlier this year, took the top spot.
Frontier Airlines
Frontier Airlines was ranked the number one US airline when it came to flight cancellations
Frontier Airlines topped the list this year with a 2.22 percentage of canceled flights.
The airline scheduled 200,296 flights from August 2023 to July 2024 and canceled 4,443 during that time.
The Denver, Colorado-based airline has a pattern of being ranked low on traveler satisfaction lists.
Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) also concluded in a 2024 report that Frontier Airlines had the worst ratio of complaints to passengers in 2023 based on data from the US Department of Transportation.
'We have been disappointed in our historical complaints,' a Frontier Airlines spokesperson said in an email to Forbes earlier this year.
'However, we are pleased to have seen a recent drop in complaints due to better operational reliability, the reopening of our call center and the New Frontier which offers clear, upfront low-cost pricing, and no change fees.'
Endeavor Air
Endeavor Air is owned by Delta Air Lines, and it operates and maintains Delta Connection flights
Endeavor Air was a close second behind Frontier with a 2.21 percentage of canceled flights from August 2023 to July 2024.
The regional airline had 203,418 flights scheduled during that time period and canceled 4,491.
Endeavor Air has been 100 percent owned by Delta Air Lines since 2013.
'What's important is that our customers know Delta always has their back if a last-resort Delta or Delta Connection flight cancellation becomes necessary,' a spokesperson for Delta told Newsweek.
'Delta and its Delta Connection partners consistently lead operational performance among the largest US carriers as shown in Department of Transportation data.'
Despite the ranking, Delta claimed that Endeavor Air operated 246 days with no cancellations between August 2023 and July 2024.
Mesa Airlines
Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, Mesa Airlines was calculated to have a 2.10 percentage of canceled flights.
The airline scheduled 90,957 flights between August 2023 and July 2024 and canceled 1,914 during that time.
Mesa Airlines serves as a partner for United Airlines and operates under the United Express brand.
The regional airline also operated flights for American Airlines until their partnership ended in 2023.
GoJet Airlines
GoJet Airlines had a 2 percent flight cancellation ranking on this year's list
GoJet Airlines is another United Express carrier on the list with a high percentage of canceled flights.
The airline scheduled only 48,997 flights between August 2023 and July 2024 and canceled 979 during that time period.
GoJet Airlines has the lowest number of scheduled and canceled flights on the list, but the data concluded its canceled flight percentage was 2 percent.
A GoJet spokesperson told Newsweek that its 2 percent cancellation rate 'largely reflects uncontrollable factors like ATC (air traffic control) and weather, which accounted for majority of cancellations, while controllable cancellations were just 0.016 percent.'
'GoJet has been the only United Express carrier to report a zero percent cancellation rate - a milestone achieved in October 2024 thanks to our team's exceptional dedication,' the spokesperson added.
'We remain focused on providing a premium, dependable experience for our passengers and will continue to adapt our practices for the best service outcomes.'
CommuteAir
CommuteAir describes itself as a 'modern regional airline and United Express partner' on its website.
It also has a 1.98 percentage of canceled flights from August 2023 to July 2024.
The percentage was based on CommuteAir's 68,794 scheduled and 979 canceled flights during that period.
Despite its flight cancellation rate, several Reddit users advised travelers to fly CommuteAir over Republic Airways in a post on the social media platform this year.
Newsweek contacted a CommuteAir spokesperson, who said they 'having nothing to add' about its ranking.
Republic Airways
Republic Airways flies for United Express, and it has a 1.98 percent
Republic Airways tied with CommuteAir in fifth place for having a 1.98 percentage in canceled flights from August 2023 to July 2024.
