Argentina vs Austria: Pre-Match Opta Facts

  • Argentina and Austria will meet at the World Cup for the first time. Argentina are unbeaten in their two previous meetings – a 5-1 win in 1980 featuring Diego Maradona’s only international hat-trick, and a 1-1 draw in 1990, both friendlies played in Vienna.
  • Since losing their group opener to Saudi Arabia in 2022, Argentina have remained unbeaten in seven FIFA World Cup games (W5 D2), scoring exactly three goals in the 2022 semi-final (3-0 v Croatia), final (3-3 v France) and in this year’s opener (3-0 v Algeria). La Albiceleste could become just the seventh nation to score 3+ goals in four consecutive matches at the tournament and first since Spain between 1998 and 2002.
  • Austria have won 10 of their last 12 games across all competitions (D1 L1), winning each of their last four in a row. However, since a 1-0 win against Chile at the 1982 FIFA World Cup, they have won just one of their 10 matches against South American opposition in all competitions (D4 L5), with that victory coming against Uruguay in a friendly back in November 2017.
  • Marcel Sabitzer is making his 100th appearance for Austria, becoming the fifth player to do so for the men’s team.
