Can Unai Emery coax a reaction from his ailing team to defeat the Premier League’s reigning champions once again? We look ahead to Monday night’s Premier League game with our Aston Villa vs Arsenal prediction and preview.
Aston Villa vs Arsenal: The Key Stats
- Arsenal were winners in 61.1% of the Opta supercomputer’s 25,000 simulations.
- Aston Villa have won four of their seven home games against Arsenal since their return to the Premier League in 2019 (L3), more than they had in their first 24 against them at Villa Park in the competition (W3 D9 L12).
- Mikel Arteta is set to take charge of his 250th Premier League game, becoming only the 10th manager in the competition’s history to oversee 250 games for a single side.
The Premier League’s opening weekend could scarcely have gone more differently for Aston Villa and Arsenal.
The Gunners kicked off their title defence with a straightforward 3-0 dismantling of Championship winners Coventry, making clear to the very few who had doubts that they remain the team to beat.
Villa were involved in a dismantling, too, but they were the victims. Their 4-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion sent them straight to the foot of the Premier League table, and it could have been even worse.
Brighton’s goals were all scored in the first 31 minutes, before Villa debutant João Gomes was sent off just prior to half-time. Had Fabian Hürzeler’s side not also needed to consider their European tie with Tromsø a few days later, they might well have inflicted more damage in the second half.
Southampton, against Manchester United in February 2021, were the last team to concede four goals and have a player sent off in the first half of a Premier League game. They went on to lose 9-0.
It’s not a wholesale excuse for their performance, but comparing Villa’s starting lineup against Brighton with the side that defeated Freiburg to win the UEFA Europa League only three months ago offers some insight into their display.
Six players who started that match – Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne, Ezri Konsa and Emiliano Martínez – were absent against Brighton because they had either already left the club or were set to depart. That is essentially the entire spine of their team.

This is the poisoned chalice that accompanies Unai Emery’s usual overperformance as a manager. He almost always gets the best out of players, and that invariably leads to critical departures.
It goes some way towards explaining why such a great manager has such a poor record at the start of new campaigns. His Villa side have now failed to score in five of their last six Premier League games in the month of August, including each of their last four. Going back to his time as Arsenal manager, Emery has lost 50% of his August games (8/16), his highest defeat rate in any month.
We can nonetheless expect an improved showing on Monday night against Arsenal. Emery will demand a reaction from his players, and the Villa Park faithful simply won’t accept a repeat display.
Villa also have a habit of stepping it up for the visits of the elites, too. They have defeated the reigning Premier League champions at home in each of the last three seasons – Manchester City in 2023-24 and 2024-25, and Liverpool in 2025-26.
The last team to beat the reigning top-flight champions at home in more successive seasons were Luton Town, who did so seven campaigns running between 1985-86 and 1991-92.
Villa defeated Arsenal at Villa Park last season, too, and rest assured Mikel Arteta will be expecting a battle here regardless of Villa’s opening-weekend performance.
This is actually set to be a momentous occasion for the Arsenal manager. He will take charge of his 250th Premier League game, becoming the 10th manager in the competition’s history to oversee 250 games for a single side.
Only Pep Guardiola (70.8%), Alex Ferguson (65.2%) and Jürgen Klopp (62.6%) have a higher win rate among managers with 250+ games than Arteta’s current mark of 60.2%.

Despite injuries to defensive stalwarts Jurriën Timber and William Saliba, Arsenal have looked as imperious as ever so far, both against Man City in the Community Shield and at home to Coventry in their league opener.
Christos Tzolis already looks a smart acquisition, and the Gunners are still waiting to give Premier League debuts to Bruno Guimarães and former Villa man Ezri Konsa.
Martin Ødegaard’s performances have hinted that he might be back to his best; Kai Havertz looks to be fully fit; and Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice don’t appear to be as overtaxed as feared as Arsenal look well placed to defend their title.
Villa will have their work cut out here and few will fancy them to get a result. But beware of their ability to rise to the occasion at Villa Park.
Aston Villa vs Arsenal Head-to-Head
Aston Villa have won four of their seven home games against Arsenal since their return to the Premier League in 2019, one more than they had in their first 24 against them at Villa Park in the competition.
Still, Arsenal have won 15 Premier League games at Villa Park, more than they have at any other away venue in the competition.
Villa have won their last three Premier League home games against the reigning champions, as many times as they had in their first 28.
