Newcastle 2-2 Bournemouth Stats: Jacob Ramsey Rescues Point as Cherries Concede Late Again

Newcastle United recovered from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Bournemouth, preserving their unbeaten start under Matthias Jaissle and leaving Marco Rose still waiting on his first Premier League win.

The Cherries built a commanding lead within 35 minutes following Marcus Tavernier’s close-range strike and an own goal from Malick Thiaw, and they were arguably unfortunate not to kill the game off in that period, such was their dominance.

However, Harvey Barnes’ wonderful finish gave Newcastle a lifeline late in the first half, and after a quiet second period, substitute Jacob Ramsey slotted home late on to snatch a point for the hosts. 

Boos echoed around St James’ Park as Newcastle went behind in the ninth minute, after having separate appeals for a corner and a free-kick rejected. Alex Scott’s shot deflected off Nico González, and Tavernier beat Lukas Hornicek to the loose ball to score.

Evanilson should have made it 2-0 when he intercepted a dire pass from Sven Botman and curled over the top shortly afterwards, with Bournemouth’s ferocious high press not giving Newcastle a moment to breathe at the back.

Another big chance came and went for Tavernier, who shot straight at Hornicek after being picked out by the roaming Adrien Truffert, but it was 2-0 soon afterwards.

Newcastle might have thought the danger had passed when Justin Kluivert’s speculative effort thumped off the post and hit Hornicek on the back before rolling out wide, but the outstanding Scott kept the attack alive and his cross flicked in off Thiaw.

Newcastle reduced the arrears before half-time, though, with Barnes bending a stunning finish past Djordje Petrovic from near the left corner of the area, only 101 seconds after Thiaw’s own goal.

Joe Willock somehow headed wide from close range soon after the interval, but with neither team managing a second-half shot on target until the 88^th minute, the Tyneside crowd grew restless.

However, when that next attempt on target did arrive, it proved decisive as Ramsey side-footed into the bottom-right corner after Barnes’ rocket of a volley deflected into his path.

Neither team could find a winning goal in six breathless minutes of second-half stoppage time, as Bournemouth were left to rue another late, result-altering goal. 

Bournemouth Let More Points Slip Away

In all three of Bournemouth’s Premier League games this season, they have dropped points via goals conceded in the 84^th minute or later.

They led Manchester City 1-0 until the 84^th minute on MD1 and lost 2-1, then shipped a 91^st-minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Everton on MD2.

The Cherries – who are 14^th in the early-season table with two points – have already dropped seven points from winning positions this season, more than twice as many as any other Premier League club ahead of this weekend’s other fixtures.

Ramsey has developed a knack for scoring important goals, as each of his last four Premier League strikes have either drawn his side level or put them ahead.

And his intervention meant Bournemouth – who won the expected goals (xG) battle by 1.5 to 0.66 – had to settle for a share of the spoils following an exhilarating first-half performance.

The Cherries fired off 13 shots in the first half, their second-most before half-time in any Premier League match ever (14 versus Chelsea in December 2025) and the most by a visiting team at St. James’ Park since September 2021 (13 by Leeds United).
