The new name is dreadful …
The Houston Astros made the announcement Monday morning that the iconic Minute Maid Park is being rebranded to “Daikin Park.” The franchise sold the naming rights to Daikin Comfort Technologies for a total of 15 years.
Beginning in Jan. 2025, the name change will last all the way through the 2039 campaign. The team has been working on updates when it comes to their stadium’s branding and signage. A “comfort technologies” and HVAC company, Daikin has launched the brands of Quietflex, Goodman and Amana.
“We are excited to be partnering with Daikin for our ballpark’s naming rights,” stated Astros owner and chairman Jim Crane. “Daikin is an international company that proudly calls the Greater Houston area its North American home. The Houston Astros and Daikin share the same values, a commitment to excellence and a desire to give back to our local community. As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of this ballpark in 2025, I am proud to have Daikin alongside us to create even more special memories for our fans now and in the future.”

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all about capitalism and making money, but I can’t stand it when money gets in the way of culturally iconic stuff. Minute Maid Park would definitely be on the list. I mean, damn, I remember being a kid playing baseball games on PlayStation and Minute Maid Park was always a big part of them. It’s just one of those stadiums.
Fast forward to my adult years and it’s gone … just like that … because of a friggin’ HVAC company.
This is 2024, baby.
