Barber gets sweet sentence after gruesome, real-life ‘Sweeney Todd’ razor attack on customer

In a horror scene right out of “Sweeney Todd,” a Yonkers barber gashed a customer’s artery during a wild attack with a straight razor — and was then handed a paltry sentence by notoriously lenient judge.

Haircutter Jeury Fernandez Navarro, 38, flew into a rage because he suspected 27-year-old Carlos Santana Cordero had sex with his girlfriend, according to trial testimony.

Cordero was sitting in another barber’s chair at Escape Barber Shop on South Broadway on Aug. 4, 2025, when Navarro grabbed his hair and jerked his head back and held a gold-plated razor to his neck, according to a criminal complaint.

As the victim fought back, Navarro swung the razor toward his face, but instead struck his left arm, according to the complaint. 

Navarro, who claimed the slashing was accidental, then picked the victim up by his hair a second time and held the razor to his neck while walking him out of the barbershop, as both slipped on the puddles of blood on the floor, according to the complaint and a video played in court. 

Outside, the wannabe Sweeney Todd — the fictional “Demon Barber of Fleet Street’ who slit his victim’s throats with a razor and sent their bodies down a chute — continued his attack on Cordero until a Yonkers cop arrived at the scene and stopped him, officials said.

Cordero suffered a lacerated artery in his left forearm and had to undergo surgery at Westchester Medical Center, prosecutors said.  

Crime scene photos obtained by The Post show blood staining the shop’s tile floor and the gold razor after the savage attack. Blood could also be seen on the sidewalk outside.

“The defendant in this case callously and intentionally grabbed a defenseless victim by the head and proceeded to viciously slash him, even as the victim attempted to protect himself,” Westchester County District Attorney Susan Cacace said.

After a jury found Navarro guilty of second-degree assault — a felony — and weapon possession, Cacace’s office asked Judge George Fufidio to sentence him to five years in state prison with five years of post-release supervision.

But the lenient judge let him off with 2 ½ years in prison and 1 and ½ years of post-release supervision. 

“While we respect the court’s decision, my office firmly believes that a more substantial prison sentence was warranted given the severity and brutality of the defendant’s conduct,” Cacace said.

Last week, The Post wrote about Judge Fufidio setting a lower bail than the prosecutor requested for a man who beat up a Bronx bus driver in a Yonkers road-rage incident.

Cacace requested bail in the amount of $50,000 cash and $150,000 bond for Thywill Anasu, who allegedly “knocked out” BxM1 bus operator Johnny Rodriguez by slamming his head on the pavement and punching him repeatedly after a fender bender on April 4, a spokeswoman said.

But Fufidio ignored the request and set bail at $5,000 cash or $50,000 bond, which the accused attacker posted. Four months later, Anasu allegedly assaulted an FDNY fire marshal in uniform in the Bronx, according to a criminal complaint there — and another judge released him with supervision.

Rodriguez suffered two brain bleeds, a concussion and a torn ligament in his shoulder in the attack, he said.

“The judge made a mistake when he let him out,” Rodriguez said of Fufidio. “They need to look at what’s going on here.”
