Watch the moment leftie Senator Bernie Sanders stays sitting down during a standing ovation at Donald Trump’s inauguration.

The independent did not appear to react as the 47th president vowed to declare a national emergency relating to the southern border crisis.

Sanders is a long-term Trump critic and his disdain for the 78-year-old was on show at the historic inauguration.

It comes as Trump declared "a golden age of America starts now" as he was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States, immediately announcing sweeping executive actions.

"We will drill, baby, drill", Trump announced in his inaugural address, promising to tackle what he called an "inflation crisis caused by massive overspending and escalating energy prices".

His administration is preparing more than 200 additional directives and orders for the coming days, signalling an aggressive start to his presidency.

The border emergency declaration will enable the deployment of military assets and "erect physical barriers" along the southern border, according to an incoming White House official.

Trump intends to block all asylum claims at the southern border and end birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants.

The executive orders will also include defining only two genders as male and female, eliminating diversity programmes in federal government, and classifying drug cartels as foreign terrorist organisations.

Trump plans to end remote work for federal employees, with those refusing to return to offices facing dismissal.

The president also announced plans to pardon individuals charged in connection with the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack.

In his inaugural address, Trump delivered sharp criticism of the outgoing Biden administration, stating: "We now have a government that cannot manage even a simple crisis at home, while at the same time stumbling into a continuing catalog of catastrophic events abroad".

He spoke of sweeping changes ahead, declaring: "A tide of change is sweeping the country. Sunlight is pouring over the entire world".

Trump referenced what he described as his divine protection, saying: "An assassin's bullet ripped through my ear, but I felt then and believe, even more so now that my life was saved for a reason".

The president pledged "the complete restoration of America and the revolution of common sense".

The border emergency declaration comes despite a significant drop in border crossings during 2024.

Monthly crossings fell to 46,000 in November 2023, marking the lowest number during the Biden administration.

Average daily crossings in December were expected to be the lowest since 2020, according to federal authorities.

A Trump official characterised the border as "overrun" with terrorists, drug cartels and "military-age males from foreign adversaries", describing it as an "invasion".

During Trump's first term, roughly 450 miles of border wall were constructed, mostly replacing existing barriers, following legal challenges to his previous emergency declaration.
