This tragedy comes just two days after an avalanche struck a group of skiers in Italy's northern Piedmont region, killing three people.

The avalanche occurred on Sunday at the eastern face of Punta Valgrande, a summit on the Italian-Swiss border.

Two survivors were airlifted to hospital, while three others suffered fatal injuries after being dragged downhill for 700m.

An avalanche warning had been issued for altitudes above 6,900ft in the affected Italian region, cautioning about a "considerable danger of avalanches."

Eyewitnesses described a violent avalanche descending the mountain, sweeping skiers from their path.

The area of the Lepontine Alps where the incident occurred has been rated with a third-degree avalanche risk level.
