The central coast enclave of Avila Beach traded its serene ocean breezes for the roar of thousands of spectators over the weekend.
The annual Beach BreakaWave Rodeo made its debut at the coastal venue and transformed the popular beach stretch into a seaside arena where competitors faced off in classic rodeo mainstays including bronc riding, breakaway roping, and barrel racing.
Coastal cowboys and cowgirls lined up along the water’s edge, using high-tensile tow ropes attached to galloping horses to pull skiers across the surf line. Spectators also enjoyed live performances by Jordan Forer and Corb Lund.
Local businesses reported massive surges in foot traffic, with nearby restaurants, shops, and boardwalk vendors operating at peak capacity throughout the festival.
“The town was probably as crowded as I’ve ever seen it, and I expect the businesses might have done quite well as well,” Edward Colson, an Avila Beach resident, told KSBY.
He added he was lucky to score the tickets to the rodeo because the event was sold out within a few hours.
Sara Elena Loaiza, who runs a local bed and breakfast in downtown Avila Beach, said that tourism is a necessity for the town and events like the BreakaWave Rodeo give the local community a chance to be social in an otherwise quiet region.
“We’re very appreciative of programs that come into Avila, especially right now when it’s non-peak,” Loaiza told the news outlet.
Beyond the adrenaline and entertainment, the BreakaWave Rodeo is a fundraiser with its roots tracing back to the COVID-19 pandemic when Cal Poly Rodeo coach Ben Londo envisioned a safe, open-air haven where his student-athletes could continue practicing and competing.
What began as a grassroots student gathering has since evolved into a massive production and an official qualifier for major events like Rodeo San Diego.
