Call of Duty is set to introduce a brand-new sub-series in the future, with Activision acknowledging that fans have grown tired of seeing the same franchises return year after year.

The CoD series has traditionally alternated between its various sub-franchises, but recent releases have seen direct sequels in consecutive years. Modern Warfare 2 arrived in 2022, followed by Modern Warfare 3 in 2023, before Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 repeated the pattern in 2024 and 2025.

Although 2026 isn’t a sequel to Black Ops 7, it’s a return to the other most popular sub-series with Modern Warfare 4.

While each game tells a new story and uses different settings, many fans have expressed a desire for something new. Activision chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl has now revealed that they’ve already started preparing a new branch of the Call of Duty franchise, rather than continuing to rely exclusively on its two biggest names.

Activision confirms plans for new Call of Duty sub-series

“So, we’ve already stated that a future title is going to be a new sub-franchise and we’ve already laid the groundwork,” he told The Game Business. CharlieIntel sources have confirmed that this game will arrive in 2027.

There’s no word yet on what the new series will be called, where it will be set, or which studio is developing it. However, past reports have claimed it will have a “modern” theme.

This will make it the first new Call of Duty sub-series since Vanguard in 2021, which took the franchise back to the Second World War. Before that, it was 2017’s WWII, with every release in between falling into the Black Ops or Modern Warfare category.

In fact, these two remain the only CoD sub-series to receive direct sequels, with the likes of Ghosts, Advanced Warfare, and Infinite Warfare all being limited to one release.
