CANADA: Transgender Killer Sentenced to Life for Murdering His Mother Allegedly Impregnated Female Inmate Before Being Paroled to Women’s Home

A convicted murderer identifying as “transgender” was transferred to a women’s prison where he allegedly impregnated a female inmate before being released to a halfway house for women. Clayton Jacob Warkentin, who now goes by Natalia Anastasia Warkova, was 19 when he strangled his mother to death in a drug-induced rage before attempting to make the murder resemble a suicide.

In 2018, Warkentin pleaded guilty in a B.C. Supreme Court in Chilliwack to killing his mother two years prior. He was handed a life sentence for second-degree murder charges, while members of his family gave emotional victim impact statements to the court.

“I struggle to trust people, as one of the people I trusted most, my baby brother, killed my mother,” Clayton’s older brother Logan said at the sentencing hearing. “How do I tell my children that their uncle killed their grandmother?”

On the night of the murder, Warkentin is said to have consumed an eight ball of cocaine. As the narcotic wore off, he began to become enraged. He asphyxiated his mother in the bathroom before dragging her body into the garage and tying a noose around her neck.

Warkentin’s motive was said to be related to a demand for money from his 51-year-old mother, Lois Unger, which he intended to use to pay back his drug dealer. While high on cocaine, Warkentin mortally asphyxiated his mother. While he was initially charged with first-degree murder, the charge was reduced to second-degree murder on the agreement that he would plead guilty. Both carry a life sentence, while a second-degree murder conviction stipulates no chance of parole for at least 10 years.

Crown counsel Grant Lindsey described how Warkentin became fixated on body building from the age of 15, and subsequently began abusing steroids and human growth hormone. To counter the effects of the steroids, Warkentin first became addicted to caffeine before escalating to cocaine use.

Witnesses told the court that Warkentin told them he might kill his mother for the insurance money, which indicated a level of planning that led to the initial charge of first-degree murder. However, the court accepted the rationale that such comments were nothing more than a sick joke, in order to allow a plea deal to be made.

Following sentencing in January 2018, Warkentin was sent to Kent in Agassiz to start his life sentence, reports independent writer Paul Henderson. He was subsequently moved to to Pacific Institution in Abbotsford in 2020. Then, in September 2021, he legally changed his name to Natalia Warkova and was relocated to Fraser Valley Institution for Women.

Fraser Valley (FVI) is a multi-level facility for women which includes a minimum security residential-style apartment unit and residential-style small group accommodation houses. There is also a Mother-Child Program at FVI, which takes place in a house comprised of facilities such as a shared kitchen, lounge and bathroom, as well as multiple bedrooms. It is situated within a compound of similar housing units, arranged to look much like a neighborhood.

Several dangerous male convicts have been transferred to FVI after declaring a transgender status, including Canada’s youngest dangerous offender, was handed a rare indeterminate sentence after being convicted of the violent rape of a 3-month-old infant. Adam Laboucan, who calls himself Tara Desousa, was 15 years old when he raped the infant so violently that the boy had to undergo reconstructive surgery.

Warkentin is alleged to have impregnated a female inmate during his stay at FVI. One anonymous source within the Correction Service Canada (CSC) reportedly told Henderson, “You didn’t hear it from me but … ‘she’ now serves at Fraser Valley Institution for Women. And ‘she’ has a 19-year-old girlfriend now, too. We have had sexual assaults, pregnancies, and who knows what else since we became ‘coed.’ I see no coverage of this in the media.”

Another tip came from a woman who had been incarcerated at FVI with Warkentin, who confirmed that he had impregnated a woman while he was held at the women’s institution.

In a 2016 social media post, Clayton Jacob Warkentin stated, “Family means a lot to me.” His tattoos read, “Love it, kill it,” and “family”.

One family member speculated that Warkentin may have been taking advantage of a loophole in order to avoid being a “pretty boy” in a men’s prison. Warkentin’s brother’s step-mother, Theresa Clark-Kampman, told Henderson: “Clayton/Natalia was not having an easy time in Kent being a young, good-looking guy so he found a loophole and said he was a girl and was moved to the female prison in Abbotsford in minimum security.”

Despite being handed a life sentence without parole eligibility for 10 years, Warkentin was released from prison on parole after serving just seven years of his sentence for the murder of his mother.

On February 26, 2025, two days after the ninth anniversary of this horrific murder, “Natalia Warkova” was granted day parole and moved into a halfway house for women in New Westminster.

While at the halfway house, Warkentin was accused of “coordinated assault” and “toxic behavior,” according to parole board records. He had attempted to initiate a relationship with one of the women there, and displayed “escalating… bullying and controlling behavior”.

Warkentin dismissed the allegations by blaming “mean girl behavior” and claimed to have been discriminated against by women based on his “gender identity.” After his parole was revoked in October 2025, Warkentin filed an appeal arguing that the board did not consider the “harm experienced by transwomen in primarily women-identifying spaces,” and stating that “transgender women experience a disproportionate amount of violence, bullying and harm” from women.

“During the parole hearing, we did not see any remorse from him about murdering this mom, still just making up excuses and saying the drugs made him not remember what he was doing,” Clark-Kampman said. “Now after only serving nine years he is out free to live his life. Well, we are scared for our lives…. Lois doesn’t get to live her life or watch her grandchildren.”

“It’s sad that we have to now live scared as he might reoffend to be able to go back to [a woman’s] prison,” Clark-Kampman added.

As reported by Reduxx, the Canadian government was recently forced to admit that female inmates have been raped and sexually abused by trans-identified male transfers. The admission was made in a statement of defense submitted in response to an ongoing lawsuit against Correctional Service Canada (CSC) challenging the policy titled Commissioner’s Directive 100: Gender Diverse Offenders. The guidelines detail the CSC’s “commitment to meeting the needs of its gender diverse offender population in ways that respect their human rights and ensure their safety and dignity.”

In a statement of defense filed on August 31, lawyers for the Attorney General defended the practice of housing trans-identified male inmates in the female estate: “A gender-diverse offender’s request to be placed in, or transferred to, an institution that better aligns with their gender identity or expression is determined through an individualized assessment that considers the offender’s risks and needs, CSC’s security and operational requirements, and health and safety considerations for the offender, other inmates, and CSC staff at the receiving institution.”

Included in the statement of defense, surrounded by jargon defending the policy of transferring violent male convicts into women’s prisons, is the admission that two trans-identified male transfers were charged with sexual assault.

A third transfer, the aforementioned convicted infant rapist Adam Laboucan, was also referenced in relation to a situation wherein he assaulted a female inmate, fracturing multiple ribs. After prison guards intervened, the female inmate who had been attacked was punished by being placed in segregation for “inciting” his assault against her. In the statement of defense it is implied that the investigation into the matter was dropped upon the discovery that the assault occurred after the female inmate referred to the convicted pedophile as a “pedophile”.

Despite the official admission of harm, the Attorney General of Canada claims, in a statement of defense, that housing violent male convicts in women’s prisons “does not infringe the rights guaranteed to cisgender women inmates.”
