A car was set alight in flames at an outdoor public car park in Hong Kong after a woman allegedly burned charcoal inside the vehicle in a suicide attempt.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the Tai Mong Tsai Road site near Wong Chuk Wan Tin Hau Temple in Sai Kung shortly before 9am on Tuesday when a man called police, reporting that his girlfriend was trying to take her life in a car there.

According to police, the woman in her 30s had exited the car before firefighters and police officers arrived.

A video clip obtained by the Post shows the white car, with its left rear door wide open, bursting into flames and billowing dense smoke.

The Fire Services Department sent two fire engines and an ambulance to the scene.
