A San Diego man has tragically died after he was electrocuted while setting up Christmas lights near a high-voltage power line.

Antonio Pascual Mateo, 24, was hanging the festive decorations on the roof of in his Escondido home on Thursday November 21 at the time of the incident. 

According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office, Mateo was found hanging upside down from a tree.  

'The decedent was hanging Christmas lights on the roof while near a high voltage powerline. 

'The decedent threw the lights over the powerline resulting in electrocution. 9-1-1 was activated. Paramedics arrived on scene to find the decedent hanging upside down from a tree', the Medical Examiner's Office said in a statement. 

 'After recovering the decedent, paramedics initiated advanced cardiovascular life support and transported the decedent to the nearest local hospital. 

'Despite aggressive resuscitative efforts, death was pronounced by the emergency department physician.'

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Mateo's family with funeral costs.

The fundraiser is also aiming to raise enough funds to transport Mateo's body to his birthplace of Guatemala, where his mother resides.  

'He fell down and stayed in the tree, trapped for an hour. Rescue team was forced to wait until the power company had to turn off power. To late to save, forever young he will remain', wrote Juan Pascual, the organizer of the fundraiser Juan Pascual wrote.

'Christmas lights forever having a meaning to us, he will remain in our hearts for eternity.'

The post also paid tribute to Mateo: 'He was a brother, a son, and an uncle. His name was Antonio Pascual. He had so much to live, only 24 years old. 

The GoFundMe had raised almost $10,000 as of Tuesday morning.
