Czechia will aim to capitalise on Mexico’s potential squad rotation on Matchday 3. Look ahead to this Group A game at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with our Czechia vs Mexico prediction and preview.

Czechia vs Mexico: The Key Insights

  • Mexico made it three wins from three games at this World Cup in 47.9% of the Opta supercomputer’s 25,000 simulations.
  • Czechia are winless through their first two games of the 2026 FIFA World Cup (D1 L1), and last failed to win during the group stage in the 1982 edition (D2 L1).
  • Mexico will play their ninth World Cup match at the Estadio Azteca; they remain unbeaten in the previous eight, winning six of them (D2).

Czechia face co-hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca on Matchday 3 in Group A in a World Cup match that will be played simultaneously with the group’s other fixture, South Africa vs South Korea.

Both teams come into the game with vastly different motivations, though.

Mexico beat South Korea 1-0 last time out to ensure top spot in Group A, confirming a game against a third-place team from Group C, E, F, H or I in the round of 32. The most important element to consider for them, therefore, is avoiding injuries and suspensions.

Czechia, meanwhile, had a disappointing draw against South Africa, against whom they were largely outplayed in the second half.

Czechia v South Africa momentum

It leaves them with a great deal of work to do to reach the knockout stages. The Opta supercomputer gives them just a 4.9% chance of progressing with a second-place finish, and a 30.2% chance when also considering the possibility of doing so as one of the eight best third-placed teams.

Mexico’s record at the Azteca is bad news for Czechia. El Tri have never lost a World Cup match at the venue, winning six games and drawing the other two. They have won their last three there in the competition without conceding a single goal: 1-0 vs Iraq (1986), 2-0 vs Bulgaria (1986) and 2-0 vs South Africa (2026).

It has been a disappointing tournament for Czechia, having lost to South Korea in their first game. They will be desperate to avoid a repeat of their 1982 performance, the only previous occasion when they failed to win any of their three group games (as Czechoslovakia).

One of their key issues at this tournament has been their failure to provide adequate service to Patrik Schick. The Bayer Leverkusen striker came into this tournament in top form, with nine goals in his final 12 appearances in the Bundesliga, while boasting a record of six goals in seven games at major international tournaments.

None of that has yet been evident at this summer’s tournament, though. Schick has only attempted two shots, and is yet to score. Indeed, he has just the fifth-highest expected goals total among the Czechia squad (0.2).

His efforts stand in contrast to those of Mexico’s forward line. Raúl Jiménez has been as dependable as ever, but Julián Quiñones deserves a special mention for his do-it-all endeavours.

Along with scoring one of Mexico’s three goals, the Al-Qadsiah forward has been involved in the most shots (10 – six shots, four chances created), completed the most dribbles (6), won the most fouls (5) and made the most high-intensity pressure (60) for his team during the tournament.

He’s one of the key reasons that Mexico are now on a three-match winning streak in World Cup games, their best-ever run in the competition. They have won both of their matches in 2026 without conceding; last keeping three consecutive clean sheets at the World Cup in 1986 (3), which was held in Mexico.

Edson Álvarez didn’t start Mexico’s opening win against South Africa, but made a huge impact when stepping in against South Korea on Matchday 2 to replace the suspended César Montes.

Álvarez has made 23 line-breaking passes in just 104 minutes played at this World Cup, which is almost twice as many as any other Mexico player (Érik Lira has the second most – 12 in 166 minutes played).

Edson Alvarez line breaking passes

He’s in line to start again here, but with first place in the group already locked up, Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre could elect to give minutes to players deeper on the bench. Czechia will certainly hope that is the case, though that won’t mean their task will be much easier in the Azteca.

Czechia vs Mexico Head-to-Head

Mexico faced Czechoslovakia at the 1962 World Cup, winning 3-1 in their final group game. This will be their first World Cup meeting since the split of Czechoslovakia in the early 1990s.

Their last meeting came in a February 2000 friendly, in Hong Kong, with Czechia winning 2-1.

Mexico have lost only two of their last 12 group matches at the World Cup against European opposition (W5 D5), doing so against Portugal in 2006 (2-1) and Sweden in 2018 (3-0).

Czechia vs Mexico Prediction

The Opta supercomputer gives Mexico the edge in this one, with 47.9% of its 25,000 pre-match simulations forecasting another win for the co-hosts.

The next most likely result is a Czechia win, at 28.7%, while the chance of a draw is close behind, at 23.4%.
