Q: Now that the UK rape gangs story is spreading on social media, allegations of it being “fake” and based on “unreliable data” and “right-wing lies” are rife. A follow-up on the source of the data would be interesting and useful. — Stu D.
A: The evidence for the UK rape gang scandal — as we reported on last week — is overwhelming. The new report drew on court records, survivor accounts, whistleblower testimony, and previous government investigations.
One of the previous investigations includes the groundbreaking 2014 Rotherham report, which found that at least 1,400 children had been sexually exploited, primarily by groups of Pakistani-heritage men.
Most recently, Baroness Louise Casey's 2025 national audit found a disproportionate involvement of Middle Eastern men in rape gangs often targeting children. This audit was also based on first-hand survivor testimony.
The claim that these are just "right-wing talking points" is not supported by the evidence. The reliability of these findings comes from the fact that they were independently reached by multiple investigations over many years, drawing on thousands of official records, criminal convictions, witness interviews, and first-hand survivor testimony that often corroborated one another.
