A: Yes, the National Guard is still out there in multiple cities as part of Trump's ongoing crime crackdown, and it's actually a bigger operation than a lot of people realize.
DC has the biggest and longest-running deployment by far, expected to run through the end of Trump’s term. It began with roughly 800 troops in August 2025, later expanded to over 2,000, and reached roughly 5,000 during a summer 2026 surge.
The results look pretty good. Homicides in DC are down somewhere between 32 and 44 percent, carjackings dropped 63 percent, and motor vehicle theft fell over 50 percent.
Memphis has its own version of this, called the "Safe Task Force," which kicked off in fall 2025 with National Guard support helping local police. Louisiana has seen troops in both New Orleans and Baton Rouge too.
Portland and Chicago are a bit messier, as troops have been authorized or put on standby in both cities, but the actual deployments have faced pushback from local officials and the courts.
