Experts have warned drivers that they will face record prices for diesel this weekend as fuel costs continue to rise across the UK.
RAC Fuel Watch data shows that motorists are currently paying 198.32p per litre for diesel after a rapid rise in price since the start of the month.
On average, diesel prices are rising by 0.57p per litre every day, having jumped almost 56p, or 39 per cent, since the start of the Iran war.
While petrol prices are also rising at a concerning rate for motorists, it remains a long way from record costs seen in the summer of 2022.
Fuel prices were last this high in the months following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, when drivers had to pay an average of £1.99 for diesel and £1.91 for petrol.
Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, said the 199.09p record for diesel will "almost certainly be surpassed over the weekend".
Retailers are continuing to elevate prices as they attempt to recoup the soaring costs of buying new supplies of fuel.
He noted that drivers are paying an average of £109 to fill a family car's 55-litre tank with diesel and £95.48 for petrol - marking the highest cost for unleaded in four years.

RAC data also shows that drivers in the UK are paying the highest price for diesel in all of Europe, with a litre being 12p more than in Finland and the Netherlands.
Mr Williams said: "Sadly for drivers, there appears to be no end in sight to high prices at the pumps as the cost of a barrel of oil hit $106 (£80) having been around that $100 (£75) mark for the last two weeks.
"A significant drop in the price of oil is badly needed but this seems unlikely without the US and Iran striking a deal."
