Disney fans have been sharing their dismay over news that the iconic teen movie Holes is being rebooted for a new TV series on Disney+.

New reports have revealed that the streaming service has ordered a pilot episode for a new take on the Louis Sachar's beloved 1998 book, which will reimagine the story with a female lead.

According to Variety, The Mindy Project's Alina Mankin is writing the script and will also serve as executive producer - while the film's original producer Mike Medavoy is also back on board.

However, the news has led to a very mixed response on social media as many fans immediately slammed the notion of swapping genders, considering its significance in the story.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one furious movie lover wrote: 'I’m usually pro reboots but this is the one thing ima go against. Holes has to be about a group of young boys in basically a prison camp!'

Another stated: 'Unironically I think Holes is one of the few (YA) stories in which it us important that most of the characters are boys…'

Disney fans have been sharing their dismay over news that the iconic teen movie Holes is being rebooted for a new TV series on Disney+

'Okay but the most important part about the original Holes is that all of the boys end up going to therapy in the end so maybe let's not do this,' a third stated.

Another fan wrote: 'I'm all for genderbending roles.....but the #Holes reboot seems pretty redundant. All the girl characters are gonna have the same personalities as the boys in the book/movie. Same issue I had with #Oceans8.'

One fan argued: 'Let’s be honest no one wants a gender swapped reboot of Holes this is making me so unnecessarily annoyed.'

Another lamented: 'The original Holes movie is one of the few truly perfect book-to-movie adaptations in existence, it NEVER needed a reboot!!!

'How the hell are you going to end up with a Stanley Yelnats IV if Stanley is a GIRL??? Tracing his *paternal* family line is like the WHOLE PLOT??'

One fan raged: 'Not them ruining holes omg NOT EVERY REBOOT NEEDS TO BE GENDER/RACE SWAPPED FOR NO REASON

'Y'all too lazy to come up with actual new and good female/poc led shows and movies.'

Another added: 'This is the most unnecessary thing ever. Holes was f**ing perfect. Do not touch it. Do not mess with perfection. Especially with swapbaiting nonsense.'

Many fans immediately slammed the notion of swapping genders considering its significance in the story

One fan wrote: 'I'm all for diversifying s*** but Holes does not need to be gender swapped. it doesn't need to be reboot either.'

However, some fans argued that the show could have potential as one wrote: 'Though the movie is classic, so much from the book was left out.

'I think this could be a good way to further those details. I do think it’s going to be hard to find better cast than this!'

Another tweeted: 'Okay, THIS can go either way honestly. I loved HOLES, a very good film that did great with its drama, story, and execution.

'But a TV series reboot has potential to be good or bad depending on how they execute the story. So hopefully the studio does it right.'

Describing the new venture, the official logline for the new series reads: 'In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.'

Many fans expressed their annoyance at yet another Hollywood reboot being made instead of original material as one tweeted: 'Holes doesn’t need to be rebooted. It is literally the perfect book with the perfect adaptation already. I'm so sick of this company.

Another added: 'Okay Holes is perfect as is, these Hollywood studios are so BROKE OMG. We don’t need ANOTHER reboot of a film from the 2000s.'

However, some fans argued that the show could have potential if done right
