Donald Trump Raises Stakes for Mike Johnson to Save Embattled Speakership

President-elect Donald Trump provided a path on Thursday for House Speaker Mike Johnson to save his job as Speaker in the next Congress.

Johnson’s Speakership is in jeopardy after he tried to rush a spending measure packed full of pork, which drew ire from Trump and Elon Musk, the president-elect’s designated chief of axing government waste.

Trump’s roadmap for Johnson appears to set a series of reasonable demands, although achieving Trump’s requests might be difficult in the context of a potential government shutdown before Christmas.

Johnson will “easily remain speaker” if he “acts decisively and tough” and eliminates “all of the traps being set by Democrats” in the spending package, Trump told Fox News’s Brooke Singman. “Anybody that supports a bill that doesn’t take care of the Democrat quicksand known as the debt ceiling should be primaried and disposed of as quickly as possible,” he said.

“If the speaker acts decisively, and tough, and gets rid of all of the traps being set by the Democrats, which will economically and, in other ways, destroy our country, he will easily remain speaker,” Trump added.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

All this drama before President Trump even takes oath of office. Demented. Do your Johnson.

Johnson is simply too weak to be Speaker, and Trump knows it. This funding debacle was a total disgrace.

My gut says that Johnson would prefer to be on the side of Team Trump, but he’ll need get it together and pass a clean, simple bill.

Johnson makes McCarthy look good. to put that bill out - so anti-America First and such a cave to Ds - rather than fighting the fight the voters want - so off the reservation!

Did he whip a clean CR? Not have the votes? They haven’t had a pay raise in 15 years but transparency ahead of the bill might have helped.
