Katie Zacharia is "transitioning out" of her position as White House press secretary, according to a senior White House official, just days after stepping into the role amid fierce criticism of her debut performance.
President Trump denied having dismissed her, telling reporters: "No no. I want her to have a good life she's been brutalized by the media."
The president said he spoke to Zacharia only moments earlier, urging her to reconsider staying in the post.
"You don't have to do this if you don't want to," he told her, adding: "I think you're better off being happy."
Mr Trump also said: "There's nothing easy about this job," questioning whether the role could satisfy anyone.
Her inaugural appearance at the White House podium on Tuesday lasted a mere 14 minutes, during which she fielded just three questions.
