Donald Trump has told GB News that he will “settle” the dispute between Britain and Argentina over the Falkland Islands.
Answering a question from Bev Turner during his visit to Ireland, the US leader said he would likely have to wade into it to prevent a “potential disaster”.
His comments come as Argentinian President Javier Milei has renewed his country’s claim to the British territory it failed to conquer during the 1982 Falklands War.
“Well, the Falkland Islands are very interesting because here we go again,” Mr Trump began.
“I remember, as a young boy- a pretty young boy, anyway- the Falkland Islands, and I think it was a different country at that time, the UK, a little bit.
“They went in, and they took it over. I'm not sure that they're doing that. They have a bit of a problem with immigration.
“So I don't know. I don't know if they're going to be willing to travel that far. That is very far away.
“I'm sure I'll be called into that potential disaster. But if they do, I'll probably be able to settle, settle it out.
“But right now you have two countries that are not happy concerning the Falklands.”
