DR Congo’s Growing Comic Scene

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s comic industry, while nascent, is promising. However, it faces a host of challenges, including high printing costs, piracy, and a lack of distribution networks. Gloria Muluku, a comic designer and entrepreneur, sees comics as a tool for fighting against the ills of Congolese society, including theft. Muluku envisions a thriving Congolese comic design industry. He draws inspiration from the rising popularity of Africa’s comic scene, exemplified by the establishment of the Lagos Comic Con and the Nairobi Comic Con. While DR Congo’s comic industry has been making attempts to grow and improve, progress has been slow, especially due to the lack of reliable distribution infrastructure. Nevertheless, Gloria is determined to shape the next generation of comic designers and has been equipping young Congolese with the skills they need to strengthen the industry and tell stories centered on Congolese experiences.
