Drivers are being warned of road chaos this weekend as major roadworks take place on two of the UK's busiest motorways.

There will be a second weekend closure of the slip lane at junction 11 near Chertsey, Surrey, this weekend.

The clockwise exit slip road (travelling from Gatwick towards Heathrow) will be closed from 11pm on Friday, October 9, to 5am on Monday, October 12.

Surrey County Council confirmed that the road will be excavated for new drainage and utility services to be installed beneath the surface.

The work has been confirmed with National Highways and takes into account other works on the motorway.

Work at J11 of the M25 has featured a widening operation for the northbound and southbound exit slip roads.

This will add dedicated left-turn lanes, enlarge the roundabout, resurface, upgrade drainage, and improve traffic signals and street lighting.

Surrey County Council has suggested that further lane closures may be necessary on the slip roads over the coming months.

SURREY COUNTY COUNCIL

Natalie Bramhall, Surrey County Council's Cabinet Member for Property, Waste and Infrastructure, said: "This important upgrade to the M25 Junction 11 will increase capacity and improve traffic flows, particularly at peak times.

"We appreciate that these works will inconvenience people who use this junction, so thank them in advance for their patience."

Drivers are being encouraged to follow the official diversion route:

  • Continue on the M25 clockwise carriageway
  • Use M25 Junction 12 to join the M3 towards London
  • Leave the M3 at Junction 1 - signposted A308 for Staines, Kingston and Sunbury
  • Turn around using the roundabout, joining the M3 southbound towards the M25
  • At M3 Junction 2, join the M25 anticlockwise towards Gatwick and Woking
  • Leave the M25 anticlockwise at Junction 11

Motorists in the North West of England could also face delays as improvement works take place on the M60.

The M60 will be closed in both directions between junctions 17 and 18 for the completion of gantry removal works at Simister Island.

National Highways outlined that this was being done to improve journey times, as well as supporting future housing, employment and economic growth.

The M60 will be closed Westbound (anticlockwise) from 10pm on Saturday, October 10, until 6am on Monday, October 12, while the Eastbound (clockwise) closure will take place between 11.59pm on Saturday until 6am on Monday.

The closure will involve the removal of four concrete gantries, with two gantries already being removed on a previous weekend closure in September.

Frances Oliver, National Highways Senior Project Manager, said: "This is a vital scheme for the north west as Simister Island is used by more than 90,000 vehicles every day, and the M62 corridor is a major trade route between the port cities of Liverpool and Hull.

"Improvements include upgrading the M60 to five lanes in both directions and constructing a new loop road so fewer drivers will need to use the island.

"We appreciate this closure will cause disruption and would like to thank everyone for their continued patience and understanding while we carry out this essential work."
