After The Netherlands banned travelers from bringing any items into the country from the Biblical heartlands of Judea and Samaria, Israel is firing back.
Israel has officially stripped Dutch diplomats operating in Ramallah of their credentials, giving them seven days to hand over their documentation and get out, following the new Dutch boycott of products from Judea, Samaria, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights.
“Israel will not let moves intended to harm it pass without response,” declared Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar. “Any country that acts in a hostile and one-sided manner against Israel will lose its influence and relevance in the region.”
“I also reiterate the urgent need to address the growing antisemitism and incitement openly seen on the streets of the Netherlands,” he added. “Not only are this antisemitism and incitement not being seriously addressed, but the anti-Israel policies of the Dutch Government are fueling them.”
Following the implementation of the new trade bans pushed by Dutch Minister Sjoerd Sjoerdsma, customs officers began conducting a targeted witch hunt against travelers arriving on El Al flights from Tel Aviv. Eyewitnesses reported that passengers were singled out, forced into line, and forced to submit their luggage to secondary inspections for banned goods like wine, dates, or olives.
When travelers questioned the sudden extra checks, an aggressive airport official reportedly screamed at the crowd: “Shut the f*ck up, shut the f*ck up and wait!”
“Is this scrutinized additionally by customs officers? Do Russian travelers get the same sh*t thrown at them?” wrote Dutch commentator Sivan Behr. “Or is your witch hunt targeting only Jews?”
For elderly Holocaust survivors, the singling out at customs has rekindled dark historic memories. “I was born during the war, went into hiding. Even then, Jews were set apart. Now it is happening again!” one 82-year-old traveler shared, fearing he wouldn’t get through customs safely.
During World War II, the Netherlands saw the highest proportion of Jews murdered in all of Western Europe. 75% of Jews, including Anne Frank, were murdered. The horrific death toll was helped by the civil service, an SS-led administration under Arthur Seyss-Inquart, Dutch police who assisted in roundups, and Dutch railways that ran deportation trains to Westerbork and Auschwitz. Even after 1945, the post-war government stripped deported Jews of citizenship while in camps and refused to pay for their transport back home.
But Jerusalem is sending a message: nations that target Israel will no longer enjoy diplomatic privileges on Israeli soil.
