Everton stormed to a morale-boosting win over Tottenham to get David Moyes’ second spell as manager up and running as the pressure continues to mount on Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou.

Moyes’ side could not be halted as they put in a first-half display full of attacking intent and creativity, aspects of the game Everton fans were starved of under Moyes’ predecessor Sean Dyche.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin came into the game having gone 16 Premier League games without a goal, but took just 13 minutes to end his drought following a neat run into the Spurs box and a slick finish. It was his first goal in any competition since September.

The chances flowed uncharacteristically for the hosts, and Iliman Ndiaye doubled their lead on the half-hour mark, turning Radu Dragusin inside out before slamming high into the net.

An unfortunate Archie Gray, starting in midfield in the Premier League for the first time, turned into this own net to put Everton 3-0 up at the break. He became only the third player aged 18 or younger to score an own goal in a Premier League match, after Gareth Barry against Charlton in May 1999 (18) and Martin Cranie against Chelsea in May 2004 (17).

Tottenham came into this game terribly depleted by injuries, but few could have predicted this level of dominance for Everton. The Toffees had failed to score in nine of their previous 11 Premier League games before this one.

And it wasn’t just in the context of this season that this was unlike Everton. For the first time since February 2017, they built up a three-goal half-time lead at home in a Premier League game (vs Bournemouth).

After the break, Spurs pushed to get back into the game but ultimately Everton’s defensive resilience told. Only six teams have conceded fewer Premier League goals this season than Everton (28).

Dejan Kulusevski gave the visitors a glimmer of hope with a well-taken goal in the 77th minute, and Richarlison got a second in injury time, but it was too little too late as Tottenham fell to a 12th Premier League defeat in 22 games this season. This is only the sixth season that Spurs have ever lost as many 12 games from their first 22 matches of a league season, and the first since 1997-98 (also 12 defeats).

Postecoglou’s side now sit 15th in the table, just eight points above the relegation zone, with a huge amount of pressure on the Australian to turn results around.
