Dolly Parton’s legacy wasn’t defined by her extraordinary talent alone; she demonstrated sheer grace throughout her life.
Parton was legendary not only for her long list of accolades, but for her incredible character. Few celebrities seemed as universally beloved; Parton had the remarkable ability to celebrate the success of others — even when their victory came at her expense. Behind closed doors, she donated her wealth generously, yet quietly.
With 10 Grammy wins, a 2011 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and 10 CMA awards under her belt, Parton had no shortage of accolades, but it’s not the data that shines through — it’s her spirit.
In 2006, the legendary singer was nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars but lost to Three 6 Mafia. Instead of applauding quietly, she beamed and applauded her competitor enthusiastically.
Three 6 Mafia member DJ Paul said Parton didn’t stop there. She followed up by writing them a letter that expressed how happy she was for them.

“We’re proud of you guys, and I’m just glad that the Oscar came back to Tennessee one way or another,” the note said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Eminem revealed that, despite never having met Parton in person, he received an unexpected letter of encouragement from her when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He shared an image of the letter on Instagram on the day she passed away.
“Even though I do not know a lot about rap music, I’ve come to know that you are the very best at it,” Parton wrote in the heartfelt note.
“Keep doing what you’re doing because you do it so well and no matter how complex your world may be just know you are very special and touch people in ways you don’t even know.”
Eminem captioned the post with a personal message.
“I’m sorry we never got a chance to meet, but getting this note from Dolly really had an impact on me. She definitely didn’t have to take the time to do it.”
He continued, “Even for a kid who mostly listened to rap music, she was an icon. A superstar in every sense. Rest easy, Dolly. And thank you for the kind words.”
When she wasn’t taking the time to write encouraging notes of support, Parton silently donated her fortune to causes near and dear to her heart.
In 1995, Parton launched the Imagination Library in Tennessee, and through The Dollywood Foundation, she launched the Buddy Program, which awarded $500 to middle and high school students who paired up and both graduated from high school in her hometown of Sevier County, Tennessee.

In 1991, Dollywood’s Eagle Mountain Sanctuary opened and has since helped shelter and preserve over 400 bald eagles.
Parton raised and donated money to help those affected by the East Tennessee wildfires and donated generously to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for COVID-19 vaccine research.
