A former McDonald's chef has revealed a secret hack to upgrading a burger free of charge.
Illinois-based chef Mike Haracz recommended McDonald's customers make a special request for the restaurant chain's burger bun.
Haracz stated in a recent TikTok video that fans need to order a Double Cheeseburger or McDouble and request a steamed bun.
'I know you're going to love it, and you're going to say to yourself "Why have I never tried this steamed bun hack before,"' Haracz said.
'In the past, I would have said such a thing was impossible because you don't mess with perfection,' food critic Moriah House wrote for The Takeout.
'But after watching a TikTok by @chefmikeharacz, my worldview has changed.'
As of now, the only fan-favorite McDonald's sandwich that comes with a steamed bun is the Filet-O-Fish.

Another former McDonald's employee said on TikTok that the Filet-O-Fish bun is kept in a steamer for 11 seconds in a 2022 video.
House confirmed that it only takes 'a few seconds' for employees to steam the bun.
'When making a Filet-O-Fish, McDonald's sticks the bun into a steamer drawer for a few seconds,' House wrote.
'This simple process transforms the bun into a warm cloud of deliciousness, perfectly primed for a burger patty, fish filet, or whatever filling your heart desires.'
She added that steaming the bun would mean customers wouldn't have to worry about 'dry, stale bread' getting stuck in the roof of their mouths.
Despite the hack's simplicity, TikTok users who watched Haracz's 2023 video admitted they were nervous about requesting a steamed bun.
'I'm too scared to ask for this at my McDonald's,' a TikToker admitted after watching the former corporate chef's video.
'Another commenter wrote: 'I feel like I'm going to get a loogie on my burger with a request like that.'

A few TikTokers claimed they've requested a steamed bun before and were satisfied with the results.
'We always do order it like that delish -and ask for no salt on fries to get them fresh,' wrote a McDonald's customer.
Others insisted their local McDonald's restaurants would never accept the steamed bun request and that they were happy just to receive their correct order.
Multiple viewers claiming to be McDonald's employees insisted they'd never received the request or had an interest in trying out the hack.
Some of them also claimed that employees at their local McDonald's restaurants never steamed buns because the machine would 'always be broken.'
The Double Cheeseburger Haracz suggested customers use is part of the new Buy One, Add One for $1 deal on McDonald's new McValue Platform.
