A former Rockstar Games developer believes GTA 6 Online could eventually let players create and monetize their own stories through roleplay.
GTA RP has transformed Rockstar’s open-world series, allowing communities to build custom characters, businesses and narratives on multiplayer servers.
The scene remains hugely popular ahead of GTA 6, with NoPixel 5.0 attracting major streamers despite some familiar names not receiving invitations.
According to former Rockstar cutscene product owner Joe Rubino, who worked on GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption, and Max Payne 3, the next step could be giving those players official ways to earn money from their creations.
Rockstar GamesGTA 6 could turn RP players into paid creators
Asked by Eldorado.gg if Rockstar could let players build and monetize custom narratives, Rubino replied: “Yeah, I do.”
However, he expects any creation tools to come with restrictions designed to protect Rockstar’s characters and artistic vision.
“If they can develop safeguarded tools that you can play within the lines of acceptability, then I think Rockstar probably could consider that,” he explained.
“There’s a reason why Warner Brothers doesn’t let ChatGPT sort of imagine Batman. There are safeguards, right? You’re going to have similar things. I just use that analogy because you could apply it to whatever the new characters in the GTA universe,” he commented.
Rubino does not believe this would necessarily be Rockstar’s first priority. He argued that GTA 6’s existing world should already offer enough content to keep players occupied for a long time.
Eventually, though, he sees a system where users can create within Rockstar’s universe while sharing in the financial rewards.
“Why wouldn’t you let that trickle down and let your player base become kind of your tribe that is actually monetizing, and they get to reap those rewards?” he asked.
Rockstar GamesDon’t expect to learn about GTA 6 Online for a while
This remains Rubino’s prediction rather than confirmation of Rockstar’s plans. The studio has revealed very little about GTA 6’s online component, even as Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick continues to discuss new monetization opportunities.
Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier also stated that Rockstar has no plans to discuss what GTA 6’s Online mode will look like anytime soon.
However, there are signs that user-generated content could play a larger role. Rockstar has sought developers with a “deep understanding” of Fortnite, which gives creators tools to build and monetize their own experiences.
Streamers are already planning around that possibility. Adin Ross previously said he wants his GTA 6 RP server to function like a full-time job, with players able to earn money through its economy.
In the meantime, creators could also benefit outside the game, as YouTube recently relaxed some monetization restrictions on graphic gameplay ahead of GTA 6’s release.
