TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - A homicide investigation is underway after a man was shot and killed Monday morning after allegedly trying to break into a home in west Tallahassee, according to a Tallahassee Police Department watch commander.

The incident unfolded at about 6:30 a.m. at the Redpoint Apartments, a housing complex located at 2636 Mission Road that is “designed especially with Florida State University students in mind,” according to a TPD press release and the Redpoint website.

Police found a man suffering from gunshot wounds when they arrived. Officers immediately began to render aid, the press release said, but he ultimately died there.

A TPD watch commander told WCTV early Tuesday that the man police found was shot after attempting to burglarize the apartment.

The unit where the shooting took place remained active for hours after the incident. Police continued to pass in and out of the apartment, ultimately working in the complex for nearly eight hours.

Early Tuesday morning, the watch commander told WCTV that the relationship between the shooter and the suspect is unknown.

WCTV later asked a TPD spokesperson what charges the shooter is facing and if the people involved knew each other. As of 6 p.m., officials said no updated information was available.

TPD said Tuesday afternoon that they were still working to make contact with the victim’s family, so the name of the man is not being released.

WCTV also obtained a letter claiming to be from residents of the apartment complex. In the message, they called for better security throughout the neighborhood. The letter surfaced after the shooting Tuesday, and it also references a prior shooting in the same neighborhood earlier this year.

Part of the letter demands action from Redpoint to address safety hazards, among other concerns.

“As this is a student living, the restriction on weapons and firearms is understandable. However, if residents are not allowed to have weapons, there must be a guarantee of their safety from external threats. Including stable times for security, updated lights, and fixed fencing.”

Letter reportedly from Redpoint residents

When asked about the letter, a manager at Redpoint said they “could not confirm or deny” receiving it.

On the Redpoint website, an FAQ section answers the question “What kind of safety and security are provided?”

“Redpoint offers electronic controlled access to each home, and individually locking bedroom doors. Community courtesy patrols are provided at select times. Management staff are also on-site and can be reached by a 24-hour phone number,” the website says.

The screenshot from the article did not come through.

It is interesting the letter from the students indicates the contracts for this housing (marketed to students) bans firearms from the premises. This is only implied in the unverified letter, and has not been confirmed.
