Freja will break the Overwatch 2 meta for one obvious reason

As Overwatch 2 players get their hands on Freja for the first time, it’s already clear that she can completely change the meta when she arrives permanently in Season 16.

New heroes are always a big deal in Overwatch, but with all of the new features like Perks and Stadium mode being announced, Freja has gone slightly under the radar. Still, she was released in-game from March 21 to 24 as part of a limited trial in Quick Play.

This gave fans the opportunity to try out her kit and the devs a chance to make balancing changes before her full release in Season 16.

While there were some early concerns that her abilities wouldn’t make Freja stand out in an already crowded DPS category, after just a few matches testing her out, it’s clear that she has the potential to be an S-tier hero that could break the meta.

Freja is set to take over Season 16

The powerful Damage heroes tend to be the ones that have a rapid time to kill and great mobility, such as Sombra and Sojourn, and that’s exactly the camp that Freja falls into.

Her primary crossbow fire packs a huge punch and has a solid fire rate, meaning she can absolutely melt through enemies, particularly the squishier Supports. Then you throw in the Take Aim secondary fire, which stops her dead in the air before unleashing a devastating explosive bolt. This is perfect for finishing off heroes who have low health in one quick blow.

But what takes her to a new level is her mobility and how it interacts with her DPS abilities. Updraft launches her up into the air, allowing her to assault the other team from the sky with Take Aim. Meanwhile, Quick Dash does exactly what it says on the tin, but also refreshes Take Aim each time.

So, once you get into the rhythm of changing each ability together, Freja can soar through the air and bombard the other team from above, while hardly having to return to the ground. Not only does this allow her to create angles for herself that only the likes of Pharah can usually access, but it also means she’s very tough to hit.

In just a handful of matches playing her, I was able to wreak havoc on Supports from the air while also melting tanks from the ground, so I dread to think what a truly top-tier player could manage.

While this all sounds great for those who decide to main the new hero, it’s likely to cause plenty of frustration for others. Any nimble hero who’s difficult to hit and deals plenty of damage can be a nightmare to play against, which is why characters like Sombra and Tracer are some of the most hated.

The good news is that when she was first announced during OW Spotlight, Blizzard made it clear that Freja was designed to be a high-skill hero. This rings true in the version of her seen during the trial, so it’s only the best players who will be able to make the most of her.

But if you’re someone who competes in the higher ranks of Competitive, or rolls the dice in Quick Play, you should prepare for a new meta DPS to face once Season 16 arrives on April 22.
